IMPACT & PRESENCE

IMPACT & PRESENCE
"To be a great Champion you must believe you are the best. If you're not, pretend you are." Muhammad Ali

In any area of life, but especially work situations, there are times when we need to step up to the mark and make an impact – whether it’s for a job interview, an important meeting, a formal presentation, or just to ensure we create the right impression. That old adage – you never get a second chance to make a first impression – is so true. So how do we ensure that we generate the appropriate level of ‘presence’ when we wish to?

Confidence and belief often fluctuate in the face of challenges – and thankfully there are ways to create positive impressions – making the right impact – whatever the challenge.

Pretending you are the best, as Ali suggests, may occasionally be OK in the sports world for handling one-off obstacles or difficulties, but in the world of business a far better strategy is to develop skills and behaviours that stick with you – to ensure you always leave the right kind of impression on others.

Everyone is already equipped with the essential elements to make an impact – it’s simply a case of clever fine-tuning! Here are some typical examples of elements that are often requested by clients who seek to fine-tune their impact skills:

• Create audience rapport – in 1:1 and group meetings;
• Transmit messages with confidence – even when under pressure;
• Respond confidently to difficult questions;
• Structure presentations for maximum impact;
• Add, when necessary, the ‘entertainment’ factor to keep audiences listening;
• Develop vocal powers you may never have known you could!
• Define and develop your own personal form of ‘charismatic impact’;
• See ourselves as others see us;
• Use ‘motivational language’ to hook your audience;
• Combine verbal and non-verbal elements to add power to your message.

It may take a little practice to define and develop your own ‘personal charisma’ to capture the attention and imagination of your audiences – but it’s certainly worth it, isn’t it? If you want to do something about your impact, or that of your team, contact
