CHARACTER, NOT CHARACTERS

CHARACTER, NOT CHARACTERS
“The main ingredient of stardom is the rest of the team.” John Wooden

Team performance is often referenced in terms of team-spirit, cohesion, congruity and synergy – elusive elements that clearly separate a group of individuals from a true ‘team’. The whole can be greater than the sum of the parts to produce equations where 1 + 1 = 3. What kind of equation fits your team?

Unfortunately team dynamics often produce equations where 1 + 1 = 0 .5 or even less! Does your team have genuine Character – or does it simply have a collection of characters?

How members of a team relate, interact with and influence one another is crucial in all aspects of life – and optimising these takes a great deal of finesse. There are many levels at which you can measure your team’s ‘spirit’ – here are a few of the basic questions that you should be asking yourself:

• Clarity of Team goals: did you know that visualising success can, in fact, reduce performance?
• Clarity of roles within the team: have you considered how ‘blurred boundaries’ and ‘informal role adoption’ have impacted on performance?
• Rules of the road: How well do all members each appreciate their, and others’, procedures, processes and penalties?
• Team Cohesion: What’s the difference between the interpersonal relationships in your team and a truly high-performance team?
• Energy & Attitude: how are these impacting on the performance of your team?
• Stages of Team development: how will you ‘develop/mature’ your team?
• Openness & Trust: what levels have you got? How will you develop these?

And this list is just the start! Some of the elements above are outlined in further depth in the book ‘Mental Mastery’ by Ken Way. Of course, if you need help in such areas, you could go straight to the author himself – Contact
