Psychotherapy Centre

A report on talk at a psychotherapy centre
Talk entitled: Building Confidence and Self-Esteem.

"The second in the series of public lectures took place on 14th April and was given by Ken Way, Sports Psychologist. His illustrated talk was lively, informative and entertaining.
Ken specialises in the area of building self confidence and involved his audience in a number of simple exercises designed to help each member improve their performance in a wide variety of fields and to convince others of their new found self-confidence.

Among other useful lessons they learned how to improve their public speaking, to set both physical and mental targets for themselves which were achievable, but at the true limits of their capability, and how to approach a challenge with a winning attitude. Ken Way has the ability to impart information in an easy manner, leaving the listener with the feeling they have been entertained and enriched by the experience.

As a Trustee of the Centre I am pleased to be able to see the quality of speakers who are giving talks is of the highest and are rapidly reaching a 'not to be missed' status."

Sarah Fitz-Gerald: 5-times World squash Champion

Those familiar with the world of squash will know that Sarah Fitz-Gerald is a household name within the sport. She has won every accolade going within her sport, including 5-times World Champion, a Commonwealth Gold medal and being named 'Australian Athlete of the Year 2002' and 'Female Athlete of the Year 2001 and 2002' – testimony indeed to her popularity and achievements.

Extracts from an article entitled 'Ken’s Way' which appeared in Squash Player magazine: (www.squashplayer.co.uk) and from Sarah’s website (www.sarahfitz-gerald.com):

"Sarah Fitz-Gerald pays tribute to Sports Psychologist Ken Way who helped her achieve her goals of winning the British Open Title and a World Title in her home town of Melbourne.“

"My successes this year are the culmination of a number of different factors and help from different people. As well as the day input of my coach Mike Johnson and the infectious enthusiasm and guidance of Jonah Barrington, equally significant was the assistance of sports psychologist Ken Way. I had several sessions with him leading up to the British Open as well as spending invaluable time with him during the Championship itself. We both recognized the British Open as an important stepping stone towards my ultimate goal, but my preparation leading up to the Open was far from ideal. I sustained back and groin problems during the Seattle Open, preventing me from training for the two weeks prior to the Championship, and twisted my ankle during the tournament itself, which dented my confidence. Ken helped me to channel everything into winning my first British Open title and I was very proud of my successive wins over Cassie Campion , Leilani Joyce and Carol Owens to lift the trophy.

With the British Open won, my focus returned to preparing for Melbourne itself. My only loss in 2001 was in Hong Kong in August, but Ken and I both recognized that this loss was tactical rather than mental. Despite limited opportunities to meet, we spoke frequently on the phone and he was a great help to me.

Much of what I have achieved at the British Open was down to Ken. Although I have only known him for a short while, I have been much impressed with his understanding of what makes sportsmen and women tick. Ken kept me focused so that I could achieve the dream of winning the World title in my home town of Melbourne. He set my goals for 2002 and so far the British and Commonwealth Gold have been realised.

It was not until I started working with Ken that I appreciated the true value of a sports psychologist. While Ken is the first person to tell me that it is me that has won the World Championship, we both know that he has made it all possible. I will always be indebted to him for everything he has done in helping me achieve my dream.

Ken helped me to put everything into winning my first British Open title and I was very proud of my successive wins.".

Extracts from an article entitled ‘Gaining the Edge’ (published in a squash magazine) written by Bruce Wright of AIM Management Inc of Canada.

"Ken recently spent some time in Toronto working with Jonathon Power (World no.3) and Canadian National Champion, Graham Ryding (World no.18). I was privileged to have been allowed to attend a number of these sessions as well as all of the group sessions held at various venues around the province. If I had to describe these sessions in one word, it would be RELATIONSHIPS! Ken quickly creates a relationship with his subjects, his environment and himself. Each session is as individual as the participants themselves, requiring a great deal of cognitive intuition and appropriate reaction from Ken (something he carries off with great aplomb!).

It was especially interesting to observe Ken conducting a one-on-one session. The self-discovery was often astonishing! The athletes, and in some cases the athletes' parents, were guarded at first, but after a few moments of easy conversation things invariably lightened up. The realization that the benefits were not only real, but lifelong in their application and effectiveness served to create many a convert. The scepticism was quickly replaced by belief in the concepts being taught and, in some cases the results were immediate. Sample comments, preserving anonymity, were: “I can’t believe how easy this concept is!” and “I never would have believed it if I hadn’t experienced it myself!”

Graham Ryding summed up his feelings on the subject as follows: “Ken accents the positive in a unique and ‘easy to buy into’ and understand method. After a few sessions with Ken I could really feel the difference. Graham went on to explain: “The key is believing, but then isn’t that the basis to success in so many areas of our lives? As I break into the World’s Top 20, it becomes more and more important that I tap into my inner strengths. Without sounding too transcendental, it is very important to be in touch with one’s inner self – Ken has helped me immeasurably in this area.” Throughout my conversation with this talented young gun, I never had any sense of false bravado or pretentious placation. Graham honestly appears to be sold on the benefits of Ken Way’s techniques. He readily gave credit where he felt credit was due!

Other participant/coaches included Jim Paton, Steve Millard, Peter Ward, Jim Sier and Rob Brooks. Each of these proven squash pros found the programme to be full marks for content and presentation.

The strongest and most immediate response, regardless of age, came from the people who opted for private sessions where they could concentrate completely on their particular obstacles and belief patterns. A large percentage of these participants claimed to have received immediate benefit from their time with Ken. I consider myself fortunate to be counted among those who took part and gained greater insight into my inner self. No hocus-pocus or psycho-babbling BS, just an insightful look at what makes me tick. In one session, with a little self-reinforcement, I managed to conquer a long-existing localised (right hand) tremor. What medical science referred to as “an essential tremor” really wasn’t "essential" at all. Once I came to realise that I (consciously or not) was in control of all that I did and felt, I ws well on my way to ridding myself of a rather substantial thorn in my side. Corny maybe, to some, but nonetheless true. Those who know me, know this tale to be fact and marvel at the technique and its obvious effectiveness, used to overcome my tremor.

Subscriber or sceptic, participant or procrastinator, there is no denying that Ken Way has had a lasting effect on a number of people."
